I grew up athletically in the cauldron that was bike racing in 1960s Ireland - Junior provincial champion 1969, training camps with Shay Elliott and Norman Sheil, Tour of Ireland rider 1970, looking forward to Munich Olympics etc - before real life took over and I ended up on a totally different path. I fell into Triathlon by accident after my wife took it up in 2003 and I started to offer some guidance on the bike section. Then I was helping out at swim sessions... and then run sessions.... I did a L1 qualification just to be 'official', did a bit more, and loved the positivity of the whole triathlon group of people.
Currently Level 3 qualified and Durham Tri's Head Coach since 2013, I've seen the number of Coaches and the range of coaching provision expand considerably for both Junior and Senior members. We've created a very successful Development Squad to point athletes towards Team GB qualification for World and European Championship events.
Looking forward, the twin goals are to provide more high quality coaching for members that matches their needs and challenges them, leads them to personal bests and maybe to international competition - and helps to keep them injury-free; and with the team of DTC coaches, fostering their further development and giving them scope and opportunity to use their skills.
