January 2012. Imagine the scene. Smoking, beer swilling couch potato decides to give up smoking and raise some money for charity. I used to swim a bit as a kid, I know what I’m going to do the London Triathlon.

No exercise for the previous 6 years. Hadn’t swam properly in 17 years, hadn’t ridden a bike since 2001, hadn’t run since High School.

7 months to turn that into being able to swim, bike and run an Olympic Triathlon.

After crossing the finishing line in London, the triathlon bug bit me. I then became a coach to give back to the sport which has changed my life. I love coaching and get a buzz form helping people improve. Finding that one thing that unlocks someone’s potential. And for each athlete its individual. There is no magic pill. Just patience, empathy and a keen eye.

2 Ironman, 2 70.3, 2 Olympic, 4 GB age group appearances and countless Sprints later. My thirst for pushing as hard as my body will allow means I am more suited to short course racing. I will go back to longer distances when I learn to pace them better.

Favourite discipline: swimming without a shadow of a doubt. It’s my happy place and I use it to destress from work and life whether that’s following a black line or sighting buoys.
