Tell us little about yourself?
I joined the Army from school and have not left yet.
Living in Lichfield which is easy to get to Tamworth and other places.
I have two adult children Rachael and Jessica one is a teacher the other a Civil Servant.
I have a lab collie cross called Sheldon.
How did you get into Triathlon?
In 2016 I completed an event at work called a Pentathlon that consisted of a 400m open water swim, a 10K run, an 18 mile bike, a shoot, a 12 mile bike and finally a 5km Orienteering event. I had come from an orienteering background so the event was a complicated warm up for my strongest event. It was a great event but it was not a Triathlon so I decided to compete at Lichfield Triathlon to see how that felt.
Lichfield Sprint was my first real Triathlon and from then I was hooked.
What is it you love about Triathlon?
What I love most about Triathlon is that it requires a lot of training and the different disciplines are good; they tend to stop the niggles and strains you get training for one sport as you exercise different muscles on each activity.
Is there a race you would recommend?
Andy Lewis – Triathlon X 2018
I would recommend the Slateman Weekend, there is a sprint and a standard race. The routes are challenging but manageable with amazing views and off road runs. The race is based in LLanberis and is a lovely town in Snowdonia. This year (2019) they have also included a Half Iron Man (70.3) distance race.
If you want a massive challenge then Triathlon X is the one, it is Full Ironman distance but the bike is the infamous ‘Fred Whitton’ and the Marathon is to the top of Scaffel Pike and back. A very hard race but a massive achievement when completed
Have you suffered a mishap or funny situation leading up to or during a race?
On my first triathlon I turned up early to get a top parking spot, knowing it was a small car park, only to realise I did not have my Tri-suit and had to forsake my top parking slot to speed home and get the suit lucky it was close.
On the Slateman I washed my goggles in the lake before the start and one seal fell off never to be found. I swam the 1000m like a pirate with one eye shut!
Do you have a favourite piece of race kit?
My Garmin Watch. It provides me info for all my training and gives me accurate details for the race and transitions.
What is your personal sporting highlight or achievement?
Completing Triathlon X
Do you have a dream or bucket list event?
Complete the New Zealand Coast to Coast
How many finishers medals have you got?
Not many from Triathlon, but too many from running and orienteering and an MBE.
When not training or competing what other hobbies / interests do you have?
I compete in Orienteering and also do Mountain Marathons (a two day navigation challenge). I also build military models, mainly tanks. I enjoy the theatre. And if i have any other time walking in the mountains is my favourite activity and have set a challenge to visit all of the Wainwright Fells.
I`m also involved with the Titans Committee as the membership secretary.
Which sportsperson do you admire and why?
I follow athletics and have done since a little boy. I loved to watch Seb Coe run and admire his commitment to sports. He has been an MP and headed up the London 2012 bid before taking over as the IAF Chairman. He has given back to the sport that provided him with early success.
