2022 club awards winners

European and British age group champion Lloyd Bebbington took home a hatful of trophies from Newcastle (Staffs) Tri Club’s annual awards ceremony on Saturday 11 February.

Lloyd’s victories - in the European standard distance triathlon championships in Poland in May and in the British standard triathlon championships in Leeds in June - were honoured by the club.

Lloyd picked up the men’s “performance of the year” trophy, the men’s “club championship” award and the annual Matheson award, which is given by club founders Julia and Ken Matheson to the member who best embodies the values of the club.

Sandra Edwards won the women’s “club championship” award for her age group performances over 2022 and Michelle Marshall picked up the women’s “performance of the year” award.

Among the juniors Jacob Oakes picked up three awards for his performances in the West Midlands Series events and the North Staffordshire Cross Country League.

The celebration evening also included an emotional tribute from Jason Riley to his clubmates who helped him when he suffered a serious accident at Ironman Bolton in July.

Jason joked that triathletes like nothing better than “some shiny bling” and presented “Riley’s heroes” medals to the team of NTC club-mates who accompanied him to hospital, picked up his kit and provided assurance to him and his family.

Jason was rewarded with the “most dedicated” member award for his determination to get back to training.
