2023 club awards shortlist

The shortlist for the 2023 members' awards is below.

Performance of the year (open)

Who has produced an amazing performance this year, in one race or several? Maybe they stood on the podium, but maybe there was another reason their performance was extraordinary? Their performance embodies the values of NTC and makes the club proud. This award is for triathlon, duathlon or aquathlon. Please note it is not for single sport events, eg for running races.

Lloyd Bebbington 

A man running hard and grimacingLloyd continued to represent Great Britain in international age group championships, taking a 2nd age group place in Madrid at the European Standard distance champs and a 4th age group place in Pontevedra at the World Standard distance champs.

At home he set a new course record at the Harrogate triathlon and was also first place overall at Castle Howard and Blithfield triathlons, plus a 3rd overall at Wilmslow triathlon.

 

 

 

 

Didier Nuttall

a man running in a raceDidier’s dedication to distance and speed continues to pay dividends.

He took first place overall at the Brutal Tri – a full “iron” distance event involving a hilly bike ride and mountain marathon that finishes with an ascent of Snowdon.

Didier was also placed 7th overall and 1st age group at the Deva middle distance tri and 8th open category at Southport Olympic tri.

In addition Didier clocked 2:42 in the London marathon and 1:16 in the Wilmslow half marathon.

 

 

Nathan Walker 

A teenage boy running in a raceNathan continues to develop in speed and maturity, taking great positions competing in adult events this year.

His performance at the Southport tri earlier this year resulted in his qualification for world age group in Malaga 2024. His swim there was one of the fastest on the day and he held his own on the bike and run.

He also won his age group at Wilmslow (where he was 12th overall), and had great results at Derby, Manchester aquathlon where he was 4th overall.

 

 

 

Trev White

a man holiding a certificate and trophyTrev has produced some great long distance performances in his 60-64 age group, taking a podium place and qualifying for the Ironman 70.3 Worlds at Swansea 70.3.

He also completed Ironman Copenhagen in 11:10, taking 5th age group in a big field.

Lesley Dawson 

a woman holding a medal after a raceLesley Dawson has had a great year, taking sixth age group place in the European standard triathlon championships in Madrid and 21st age group place in the World sprint triathlon championships in Hamburg.

She also placed third overall woman and first age group in the Cardiff Sprint Triathlon.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sandra Edwards

a woman running in a raceSandra Edwards had had another great year, producing high placed results at home and at world age group level.

She took seventh age group place at the world championships olympic distance triathlon; took fourth age group at the Outlaw half “iron” distance event at Nottingham; was fifth overall, second lady and first in her age group at the autumn Oulton Park sprint duathlon; was fifth woman, and first age group at the Shropshire Olympic triathlon, was second woman and first age group at Blithfield triathlon, and second lady and first age grioup at the Burntwood aquathlon.

 

 

 

Patience Lamb

a girl holding a trophyPatience continues to go from strength to strength and her determination has resulted in some superb results.

She follows a programme of training and racing with British Triathlon and was selected to compete at the European youth championships in Spain in the summer following a series of great results.

She unfortunately fell heavily in that race, but she bounced back and later in the season was placed third overall in the British series A youth super series.

 

 

 

 

Lisa Ho 

a woman cycling in a raceLisa has undertaken a punishing schedule of long distance events this year, producing some great times.

She took third age group place at the Outlaw full distance event with 12:45, followed just a few weeks later by Ironman Tenby in 14:51.

In shorter distance events Lisa took first age group place at Ashbourne triathlon and third age group at the Darley Moor spring duathlon.

Michelle Marshall

a woman running in a raceMichelle has taken part in multiple international events this year, while continuing to qualify for more events next year. 

She took sixth age group place in the world championships super sprint event, 11th in the European aquathlon sprint and 26th place in the World tri sprint.

At home Michelle was third woman at Deva Olympic tri, fifth age group at Southport triathlon, and third woman and first age group at the Stratford triathlon.

 

 

Volunteer of the year

This is the member in the background, making the club what it is. Based on always being there to help out and support other members during training or racing.

Michelle Marshall

a woman running in a raceAlongside her great racing results, Michelle is our ladies team captain and does a great job of encouraging persuading and organising members to take part in races.

She has pulled together teams for the Cholmondley relays as well as for the cross country races. 

In addition she has been instrumental in organising the sub committee for the awards night.

 

 

 

 

Sarah Thorne 

a woman running and smilingSarah displays great commitment to support the coaches and club as an activator and coach at track sessions.

She helps to lead the Sunday morning 5km runs, providing lots of encouragement to newer and less confident runners. She is very encouraging to so many of the new and old members.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Paul Adamson

a man wearing a black and red topPaul has given freely of his time for many years to support the club through coaching run sessions, bike rides and swimming – both in the pool and at open water. Over the last year he has focused on organising and coaching sessions at the club’s new venue at Kidsgrove and at the regular open water sessions at Astbury. Paul will be stepping back from coaching next year and club members will miss him and his guidance as our swim coach extraordinaire. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Simon Chubb

a man running in a raceSimon is supportive and encouraging to everyone in the club, while taking part in many events, training sessions and activities. Simon organises and leads a regular winter Tuesday evening run, whatever the weather and he has contributed to the safety team at open water swimming. He also found time to win his age group in the UK Triathlon age group series.

 

 

 

 

 

Most dedicated

Based on being at all training sessions, irrespective of the weather.

Charl Clayton

a woman holding a bicycle above her headCharl has really got involved this year and has been a regular at the Tuesday summer cycle rides, and the Saturday steady rides. She’s a regular at Wednesday Track sessions and Sunday swims too. She is also stepped forward to take part in the awards night sub committee. If only we could persuade her to join us at cross country!

 

Matt Harper

a man running in a raceMatt is lead run coach and a regular at the side of the track at Northwood, giving encouragement and supporting members to progress with their speed. He also organises the Sunday morning runs, even when he’s struggled to take part due to injury. In addition Matt is a stalwart of the cycle chain gang and Saturday rides – often organising and leading rides himself. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

John Braithwaite

a man runningJohn makes regular appearances at Tuesday night chain gangs, Wednesday night track sessions, Thursday open water sessions and Saturday morning rides. He would also probably do Mondays and Fridays if there was a chain gang on these nights too!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Gary Payne

a man gives a thumbs up, wearing a medal after a raceGary has joined in the full range of the club’s activities since joining up. He is a regular at swimming, run and cycle sessions. He is a stalwart and a great advocate for the club too – often sharing his achievements with his Instagram followers.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Most improved

This member is voted for on the basis of the improvement in their fitness, results and ability over the year. This award is for triathlon, duathlon or aquathlon.

John Braithwaite 

a man runningJohn took on his first half “iron” distance at the Outlaw event in Nottingham in May, and threw himself into the training, reaping rewards with a 5:28 time overall.
John works hard at his training, turning out for chain gang, Saturday rides, Wednesday night track sessions, Thursday open water sessions and Saturday morning rides. He also takes part in many club events and activities.

 

 

 

 

 

Ricki Larkin

a man running in a raceRicki struggled to swim a 20m length and, as he put it, “drank half the pool” at Trentham when he joined the club in 2021. His hard work and training came together as this year he completed a 1900m swim in Outlaw half “iron” event. 
Ricki also works hard at his cycling and running – holding his own on the chain gang and Saturday fast group rides and taking part in the cross country team. He’s not resting on his laurels and he has plans to do a full Ironman event in the summer.

 

 

 

 

 

Katy Goodwin

a woman running in a raceKaty is a regular attendee at swim sessions. She started in the beginners’ lane and quickly moved into the next lane. She completed Cholmondley (her first triathlon) and Nantwich this year and has joined the cross country team. Katy is always very encouraging of other members too.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Will Slater

a man pushing a bicycle in a raceWill works hard at his training and has been rewarded with some great results through the year.  These included ninth overall at Darley Moor autumn duathlon, fifth overall at Shropshire sprint tri and a great time of 5:31 in the Staffordshire Ironman 70.3 – on a blisteringly hot day.
